PostSubject: Grasp of the Empire: Reign Guild Story Project    Grasp of the Empire: Reign Guild Story Project I_icon_minitimeFri Jan 07, 2011 11:38 pm

Greetings RiG community from Reign! The purpose of this thread is to reach out to RiG and the larger SWTOR community by sharing the fruits of the Reign guild story project.

Reign: Grasp of the Empire is a joint story writing effort with contributions from Levlin (Darth Eclipter), myself, and the Reign leadership. Its aim is to strengthen our budding guild community by creating a guild member chosen and lore based back story of the origins of Reign. Each week, Reign’s fan fiction writers will collaborate to craft the next link in the story, and at its conclusion, present guild members with a plot branch that they will vote on to guide the course of the story. In the end, we hope to have a well crafted story that the membership of Reign can feel they had a hand in creating, and a greater connection to the SWTOR community as a whole.

The plan for this thread is to update every Friday after the Reign membership votes have been tallied. We will then update the next chapter in the story, provide the branch choices, and provide the metrics on guild member voting. We hope you enjoy reading this project as much as we've enjoyed creating it.

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire

Chapter One

Written by: Variable

Peering into the vastness of the void is akin to loosening one's grip on sanity, some say. It casts the gaze away from what grounds a person in reality. It makes one feel empty, insignificant, and reminds of how fleeting life in the universe can be. Admiral Garow did not share this philosophy, and, in fact, felt a comfort as he fixed his eyes toward that emptiness off the port bow of the battlecruiser Injunction. In Garow’s mind, there was a sense of a greater mechanism at work. Galaxies, stars, planets; they all gyrate around like gears in a sophisticated and multifaceted engine. Everything is as it is supposed to be, and this provided him some comfort. Comfort that he needed, as the hooded figure standing behind him wryly asked again,

“Admiral, must I explain to you again the sensitive nature of this task?”

“No, my lord. However, the responsibility is my own, and would respectfully request you release my subordinate,” Admiral Garow said flatly.

The uniformed man left previously dangling in mid-air fell to the ground in a heap, and was left gasping for breath. The hooded zabrak’s grin exuded malice as he turned his gaze to Garow. An ever so slight cinching of his collar reminded the good Admiral who was in charge, despite the sith’s acquiescence.

“Splendid,” replied the sith lord. “My master will be pleased this matter has your full attention.”

“That will be all, leftenant,” said Garow, as he rounded on his heel to face the dark figure in the doorway of his office. Garow’s first impression of the zabrak was that he might have just as soon been chiseled from the thigh of a rancor. He wore the typical dark grey robes of the Korriban academy, and a black cloak that could scarcely contain the girth of his shoulders. Drawing his gaze to the sith’s face, Garow noted the customary black tribal tattoos associated with the zabrak race. Additionally, the young sith’s façade included a strong, square alabaster jaw line that moved into prominent cheek and brow bones, and ended with a crown of ebony horns whose chips and cracks belied the apprentice’s delight of battle. Twin pale eyes of ruby and amber peered back at Admiral Garow, awaiting his response.

“My lord, I have narrowed the field of potential agents to four of the most promising for the Dark Council’s consideration. These four dossiers contain the pertinent information on each subject.” Garow punched a few buttons on his desk, and a vivid red hologram jumped to life between the two men entailing brief descriptions of their subjects.

Chapter Two

Written by: Darth Eclipter

Levirik sat with his back against the soft nerf hide seat. The ambassador stood before him profusely sweating, obviously uncomfortable with the way the meeting was going. Had he not been a representative of the Galactic Republic Levirik may have felt some guilt for putting him in this situation. Deciding it was best to proceed with his plans Levirik cleared his throat and stood up.

“Ambassador, I understand that the republic wishes to settle this dispute. However as I have mentioned, I am in no position to authorize any type of troop withdraw without coming to a compromise. Now, the Empires demands are simple we require the senator and the holocron that she is keeping. Once they are in our possession you have my word that the Sith Empires ground troops will be recalled.” Levirik crossed his arms as he waited for the ambassador to reply.

“I have your word Levirik, a full ground recall, than you and the fleet will move out of the system.”

“That is right, leaving the way for you to declare whomever her successor. As well as reclaiming some of battle droid plants”

The ambassador walked to the window and opened his comlink and spoke into it. Moments later, the door to the conference room opened and in walked an older woman with grey shoulder length hair. Her attire was classic Coruscanti.

“Representative Levirik” she said with a thick Coruscanti accent. “Welcome to Balmorra, its not everyday a Chiss makes it to our little world. I have been told that you and the Ambassador have reached an agreement. It is my understanding that I will be accompanying you aboard your ship to discuss further details regarding the Empires full retreat from the Nevoota system.”

“That is correct Senator; we can get underway as soon as you hand over the Sith Holocron.” Levirik said as he neared the senator with his hands clasped behind his back.

“Surly representative Levirik you don’t expect me to hand that over to you, I will give that to your superior when I met with them aboard your ship. Shall we depart?”

“After you, Senator” Levirik motioned to the doorway.

Uthous stood next to the captain in the hanger bay of the Distend and watched as the shuttle carrying the Senator set down. His presence made the captain and all the troops in the area uncomfortable he could feel the fear rolling off of them. The shuttle’s boarding ramp extended as the Senator and Levirik walked down.

Uthous approached them both. “Senator” he said in his deep voice “I trust you brought the Holocron I was searching for with you.”

Reaching into her robes the senator pulled out a small black cube. “I believe this is the item you are referring too” she said as she held out the cube to him.

“Indeed it is Senator I think that’s all the service we require from you.” Uthous spoke as he placed the holocron within a pouch on his belt and ignited his lightsaber. His orange blade came to life lighting up the area around him.

“My lord, I thought I was here to discuss the full retreat of your troops” the senator stammered as she tried to back away.

“Consider the discussion ended” Uthous said as he plunged his blade into the head of the Senator, her body fell to the floor of the hanger bay. Turning to the Captain he continued “Order the direct bombardment of the Republic base below. Send in our troops as soon as the complex is in rubble, I don’t want any Republic personal left alive.”

“Yes my lord” The captain responded.

Uthous walks over and stands in front of Levirik. Calling upon the force he picks Levirik off the floor of the hanger bay in a force choke. “Next time perhaps you could be a little quicker with a recovery of such an ancient artifact, Sith don’t have days to wait for results! You had best learn that now.”

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire

Chapter Three

Written by: Variable

A bemused chortle as sudden as the action that summoned it split the tension that had previously hung between the Sith and the Chiss. The finely tuned gears residing in Uthous’ ocular implant quickly whirred to life as they attempted to bring the object now hanging inches from his view into focus. The seemingly helpless worm, which he had released as he diverted his considerable abilities to catch the incoming projectile, now stood before him with a phlegmatic aplomb that belied Levirik’s discipline.

“Well now,” sneered Uthous as he playfully twirled the Imperial manufactured dart. “Representative Levirik just doesn’t have the same ring to it anymore, now does it? How fortuitous that I should come into possession of not only this Jedi artifact, but the intelligence haunt who is going to tell me all about it.”

The projectile that had been previously occupying lazy orbits in the space between the two men made a final rotation and came to rest on a plane whose protracted trajectory would plunge the vector into the heart of the stoic operative. As it did so, the change in the Sith’s demeanor resembled that of a carnivore who had grown weary of toying with the kill.

Uthous spoke as his glare narrowed on his prey, “And you will tell me everything I intend to know, Operative Levirik.”

The Chiss allowed the slightest bit of emotion to play on his lips as he took a half step back and retorted, “All in due course, my lord.”

White engulfed Uthous’ vision as the space inhabited by the agent’s dart detonated in a cacophony of light, sound and pressure, followed quickly with the crimson rage that is the hallmark of the Sith. Recovering quickly, no amount of the white hot contempt that lingered after the blast would avail Uthous to invoke the operative who was now nowhere to be found.

“How long have we played this game, Karkis?”
The hooded figure spoke these words in a way that was matter of fact, yet flecked with the slightest hints of fatigue. His face was a sickly and pallid beneath his robes, and it bore the scars of his ascension into his lordship. Many of these were gifts visited by the alabaster Zabrak guest who stood before him now, smirking impishly.

“Now cousin, do tell me you have not lost your taste for the Emperor’s grand menagerie. There are many within the ranks that would delight in the news that Lord Arzon has lost his stomach and see fit to escort you from prominence,” Karkis beamed.

“There are precious few things I believe in, Karkis. The eternal state of our battle of wits is among them,” Arzon replied.

“You believe in the Empire, cousin.” The Zabrak’s gaze narrowed, “Which is why the information I provide to you is paramount to not only to the continuance of our petty rivalry, but to the assurance of our place within the great Empire you cherish so fervently. Is it not more laudable for our struggle to decide which of us sits at the Emperor’s right hand?”

“And this Jedi artifact is the means to your design? You leave me an intriguing possibility to consider, cousin.”

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Four

Written by: Darth Eclipter

The explosion rocked the ship as Levirik sprinted away from the Sith Lord that had him in his grasps not a moment earlier. Activating his Energy Shield near seconds before the white hot heat engulfed him was his only saving grace. This wasn't the first over eager Sith to want to kill him, and he was sure it wasn't going to be his last. Working in a field where Sith thought they had all the power was just part of a normal days work.

On his way to bringing the senator they told him he was setting down in docking bay 4815b. Leviriks personal ship the X-70b Phantom was just two hanger bays from his current location. It was his only hope of escape. Taking cover as a group of Troops passed by, Levirik opened his palms. Sitting in it was nothing other then the Holocron he was assigned to get. Levirik snatched it from Uthous' belt while the Sith Lord staggered back from the blast wave. This little device held whatever his associate needed and it was Leviriks job to get it to him. No matter who or what tried to take it.

Levirik managed to pass undetected as he made it to the Phantom. Activating his special security code the ramp under the wing lowered as he ran up it. Aboard Levirik had everything he would need to uncover the secrets of this little device. However, he need time to decode it so he could send an encrypted message back to his associate. With a Sith Lord hot on your heels you don't have much of that.

Heading straight to the bridge, Levirik prepped his shuttle for launch. He would need to find a safe spot before he could begin his real work. Outside alarms where blaring, was it because of him or something else he did not know. The ship gave him a green light reporting he was clear for take off. Levirik speed off from the Imperial Cruiser and out into the unknown.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Uthous vision cleared, the worm of the agent was nowhere to be seen. Igniting his blade he reached out in the force to feel for the scum. He could feel Levirik running at top speeds towards another hanger, no doubt trying to make it to his ship before Uthous could stomp out his puny existence. Turning to the nearest group of soldiers that were just now picking themselves off the ground Uthous ordered "Find him, bring him to me..and if you fail, you die. Is that clear soldier?"

The trooper acknowledged with an affirmative and took off with his squad in the direction Uthous pointed. Uthous deactivated his blade and pulled out his comlink. "This is Uthous, I need to know what ship that Chiss came on, and I need you to follow the jump coordinates if it leaves its hanger. Send the information to my private ship."

Reaching into his belt Uthous felt for the Holocron...

Rage filled him as he ran after the Chiss.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Levirik made the jump to light speed as soon as he was out of range of the Sith Cruiser. Assigning the Navi Computer to make small jumps to prevent being followed, Levirik got to work on decoding the Holocron. After what felt like hours an image of a small green creature appeared in a holographic form from the cube.

"Greeting, I am Master Vandar Tokare" The holographic image tilted its head "Jedi you are not?"
Levirik was taken aback as the small creature seemed to be talking to him.

"I am no Jedi" Levirik responded "But I am no Sith"

"Access this how have you? For Jedi this was made." The hologram asked

"I am in desperate need of the information you posses Master Tokare, the galaxy has been divided Sith and Jedi struggle for control."

"Sith and Jedi you are neither, Trust you why should I?" The Hologram of the creature continued to look deep into Levirik.

"Listen, if you do not share what it is you have with me, then forever it will be lost. I can pass the information on to reliable people who will use it for the betterment of all species." Levirik pleaded with the image.

The creature bowed its head in thought. "I can not, Valuable is the information you seek for one not adept in the force. Begin your search I can give. The planet you seek is...

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire

Chapter Five

Written by: Variable

“Hoth…”

Lord Arzon’s utterance cleaved the silence that had hung between the eternal rivals as so many saber assaults had before. The planet’s surface through the starship’s main viewport flooded the interior of the craft with a blinding light that seemed to seep into everything it cast upon, turning the ambiance a ghostly sallow. As the ship’s durasteel gangplank plunged itself into meter deep snow and the impenetrable tundra below, the bitter cold of the planet poured into the ship and settled into its bones, robbing everything it touched of warmth.

Arzon drew his robes tighter around his frame as he descended the gangplank. Scanning the horizon, he seemed to agree with the context of the moment. He had to admit hiding an ancient power within the heart of this icy rock was a prudent decision on the part of the Jedi. It would have been foolish of them to think the locale alone would be enough to deter the ever persistent Sith, but it would be equally foolish to assume that the Jedi had not accounted for this personality trait. Time would soon tell how prepared either side would prove to be.

“My agent has managed to decipher the location of an ancient temple connected to the holocron here on Hoth. He should be arriving soon,” the tattooed Zabrak called from behind him, descending the gangplank toward Arzon. “The plan is to…”

Karkis’ speech was abruptly undercut as a force the weight of his star fighter impacted his chest and lifted him off his feet. Milliseconds prior, a sense of the impending blast entered his mind, but had only served him enough to flinch slightly to his right. At the point of impact, this movement caused his body to cartwheel in a parallel relation to the ground. Every nerve in his skull erupted with pain a second before his perception was snuffed and unconsciousness surged into his mind. In his dizzying arc, Karkis’ head had collided with the gangplank support pylon and sent him spinning face down into the snow below.

Arzon’s words were now the coldest thing beholden to Hoth. “No, cousin. I will not wait for you to enact your treachery. Your design is now my own, and should you wish to walk my path, you will do so humbled. I will await your return at the temple.”

As his last word was absorbed into the swirling icy wind around him, a sudden sound from behind betrayed the fact that he was not alone with Karkis.

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Six

Written by: Darth Eclipter

The Phantom set down on the cold unforgiving terrain of Hoth. The ice fogged the window of the starship as Levirik sent the message to Karkis. If Levirik knew anything about his contact it was that Karkis was probably already on his way here. Wiping the fog away from the glass he could see the Ancient Temple that was half buried in snow in front of the ship. This old Jedi Temple held the secret that would lead to the destruction of the Republic and the Rise of the Empire.

Exiting the ship, Levirik made his way to a hole in one of the temple walls. Breaking down the ice he dropped down into a small chamber. The room was round with seats spread out in a circle. A door leading out of the chamber was broken open. Leaving the room of seats Levirik made his way through the temple. Abandoned as it was, it had once been a fully functional base with everything a temple for training required. Scattered through its halls were marks of battle, a battle that was long forgotten and lost. Had the Jedi that once been stationed here won or lost he could not tell.

Levirik entered a dark room. From outside he could hear as a shuttle was setting down crushing the snow beneath it. Karkis must have finally arrived. Pulling out a glowrod from his belt Levirik held it up. The room had empty broken racks scattered all about it. It appeared to once hold Vibroswords, Blasters and other weapons. This must have been an armory of some sort. Turning around to leave the room something caught his eye. On the far side of the wall half hidden behind icicles that hung down from the ceiling was a symbol. Walking over brushing the frost off the wall and breaking down the icicles he was able to make out a symbol. It was a three pronged triangle with three squiggling arrows pointing towards its center.

Rubbing his hand across the symbol, it began to glow a faint orange. The three arrows moved as one colliding into the triangular shape. The wall groaned as stones that had long been frozen in place began to move pulling apart revealing a small compartment. Inside the compartment laid…

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Seven

Written by: Variable

The rumbling of settling exhaust had driven Levirik to investigate the identities of the new arrivals to the operation. He knew to expect the Zabrak, Karkis, but when dealing with sith, any number of outside vectors could find their way into the equation. Sour stagnant air gave way to a bitter and turbulent cousin as Levirik secured the ancient text and broke the plane with the surface. Up here, the dirge of howling wind seemed almost electrically charged, its bay interrupted by a distant popping sound. Willing the current to betray a location, the capricious storm now whispered tales of a battle now raging somewhere in the vicinity. Given the layout of the temple, nestled within a rocky outcropping enshrouded in ice and snow, Levirik’s best guess placed the fray on the opposite side of the site from his current location. Remaining low to the ground, he traversed the ruins, skirting the perimeter and navigating toward the fracas. A time forgotten section of dilapidated wall extended 20 meters in length and provided sufficient cover with which to view the struggle ensuing 200 meters below.

The digital range finder silently found a comfortable viewing distance as Levirik placed the sleek Imperial issued binoculars to his face. Orange, red, and white lights danced and spilled about the ice as two hooded figures, bathed in the same glow, battled fervently. The sith met in a clash and separation, the red saber wielding sith finding the advantage as a violet burst of light split the distance, striking his opponent and sending him and his lightsaber spinning in opposite directions. Taking a closer look, Levirik recognized the man’s ravenous look and ocular implant, now left sparking intermittently after the lightning impact. The downed man was Lord Uthous. The attacker wheeled to finish Uthous off, but stopped suddenly as a high pitched groan penetrated the battlefield. The red saber wielding sith glanced over his shoulder to find the source and found the port thruster of Karkis’ Interceptor unnaturally trying to free itself from its housing. Uthous’ arms were outstretched as his attacker narrowly evaded the engine now crumpling into the ice with a deafening explosion.

Unnoticeable in the last savage seconds, Levirik’s brain finally acknowledged the existence of a tiny noise dutifully pinging on the computer mounted on his forearm. It was the comlink to his Phantom telling him he had just intercepted a transmission. He fully diverted his attention from the fray and called up the captured message.

There wasn’t much time. If the Dark Council was involved personally, they would have a systems force on the doorstep within 48 hours. Levirik looked back over his barricade and saw that Uthous and his attacker had both recovered and were squaring off for another round. Karkis had finally come into view now as well, dark glistening blood blotting out the left side of his usually pale face. Levirik swallowed hard, knowing what he'd have to do next.

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Eight

Written by Darth Eclipter

Levirik sat back and watched as the battle unfolded in the snow below. The three Sith Lords were truly a marvel to behold…

Arzon’s lightsaber blade smashed against Uthous’s in a brilliant display of sparks. “Fool, do you really think you can defeat a master of the Sith” Uthous called out as their blades were pressing against one another. “Whatever your reasons for being here come to an end! The Chiss is mine!” Uthous pulled his leg back and kicked it against Arzon’s knee.
Arzon thrown off balance, he fell toward Uthous, but through the force, Arzon pushed against Uthous and flew backwards. Flipping in midair, he landed in the snow a few meters away.

“Listen to me you idiot” Arzon called as he landed “I am not interested in your stupid Chiss. I came here for reasons of my own.”

Uthous force jumped forward, bringing his blade into a high slash as he came down onto Arzon. Arzon somersaulted to his side as Uthous’s blade burned into the snow covered ground. Standing, Arzon threw his lightsaber at Uthous. The blade twirled through the air as Uthous ducked under it. The blade returned to Arzons hand as he called out “Stop!”

“I will not let my prize fall into another’s hand!” Uthous yelled back as he readied his lightsaber again. “I need what he has!”

“Children settle yourselves!” Karkis called as he walked out from the ships ramp. Both Uthous and Arzon looked at the Zabrak as he made his way down, blood still trickling from his head. Looking at Arzon, Karkis shook his head. Turning his attention to Uthous, Karkis said “The Chiss is of no concern to you. Whatever your reasons for being here are forfeit. Be out of our way before I report you to the Council. You are interfering on a matter of highest priority in The Empire.”

Uthous keeping his attention focused on Arzon shouted back. “I too am on a mission from the Empire. A Chiss that escaped from my ship lead me to this planet. He carries something that is mine.”

“The Chiss is under my employ, therefore he and his belongings are under my custody and are property of The Sith Empire and our Emperor.” Turning to look at Arzon, Karkiss began again. “Apparently we have a common goal after all. Now if you both will…” a deafening sound stopped Karkis in mid speech.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Levirik watched as the three Sith talked. What about he had no clue, but if Uthous was discussing something with Karkis it couldn’t be good. Why he ever agreed to work with Sith was beyond him. He needed to get to Karkis and Karkis alone. Levirik pulled out his suppression grenade and loaded it into his launcher. Taking aim over the three sith he pulled the trigger. The grenade soared through the air and detonated. A sonic wave exploded from the device suppressing the sound around the three. Using his time wisely Levirik activated his comlink and sent an urgent message down to Karkis using the Zabrak’s native language. Levirik hoped that the suppression grenade gave Karkis enough time to read the message.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Karkis dropped to the snow as the device went off. Looking up he noticed that Arzon and the other sith were flat on the ground as well. A small pulsing light coming from his comlink attracted his attention. Activating the Comlink a series of text scrolled across the face. The text was in his native tongue. It read “I have the object meet me aboard the phantom.” Turning off the comlink Karkis stood up brushing off his robes.

“Is this some kind of trick you two are trying to pull?” Uthous yelled out as he reignited his blade. “The time for your games is at an end.”

“Imbecile, why would we set off a device to deafen us? It’s obvious that it was this Levirik you seek.” Arzon called back to Uthous.

“Enough of this!” Karkiss called out. “I have just received a message from our friend; he has asked to meet us aboard his ship. Apparently he did not feel it wise to come in between the two of you.” Waving Uthous away he said “Come on, I imagine he will have the answers you both seek.” Looking towards Arzon, Karkiss spoke “Lord Arzon if you would be so kind as to lead us over the ridge to the next valley I think you will see the ship where the Chiss hides."

Taking the lead Arzon guided the way followed by Uthous and Karkis right behind him.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Levirik sat in the conference room aboard the Phantom awaiting Karkis. He had unrolled the ancient text that lay before him. Looking it over he felt all but helpless, hopefully the Sith Lord could make more sense of it than he could. The console on the far wall beeped informing him of the Siths’ arrival.

Levirik stood up and straightened his shirt as the door slipped open. Uthous walked into the room. Immediately fearing the worse Levirik went for his blaster at his hip. Pulling it up it flew out of his hand and past Uthous as Arzon caught it in his grasp. The other Sith was the one that was fighting Uthous, Levirik noticed. Behind Arzon came Karkis. The three Sith stood facing Levirik across the table.

Levirik was a trained Imperial Agent and a Chiss. He stood his ground not betraying a hint of emotion as he stared down the three Sith Lords. Looking down he noticed that the ancient text was sitting there for anyone of them to grab. Slowly while keeping his focus on the Sith he slid his hand towards the table to retrieve it. The text slid across the table and into the hands of Karkis.

“Levirik I am told you are familiar with Lord Uthous, may I introduce to you Lord Arzon” Karkis said as he looked down at the text.

Levirk stayed silent as he watched the other Sith. Keeping one eye on the text in Karkis hands.

“I assume Levirk” Karkis continued “That it is this text that has brought us all together. Do you really think this is what the Jedi were hiding?”

“Lord Karkis, As you know I am subject to the will of the Empire. I would prefer we discuss this matter in private.” Levirik said.

The armored fist of Uthous smashed against the table “You listen to me you son of a hutt, I aught to kill you were you stand. I demand to know what is going on here and why you stole that holocron.”

Levirik looked at Karkis. Karkis turned to Uthous and Arzon “He was here for this.” He said as he passed them the text. Arzon and Uthous both took their time looking over the text.

Arzon threw it on the table at Levirik and said “Well what good does this do..its in ancient Sith, only the Emperor and senior members of the Dark Council can read this. Maybe a handful of other people.”

Levirik looked at the three Sith. “Then that’s where we are going to have to go, it’s your choice The Emperor, the Dark Council or one of the other two contacts I know…”

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Nine

Written by: Variable

“Your protest is noted, Chiss,”
Lord Arzon hissed irritably as he stood on the command deck of the X-70B Phantom. At its helm, the agent sat in silent acquiescence, the illuminated displays of the ships controls reflected in his crimson eyes. He let escape the slightest sigh and deftly began to enter the ordered coordinates.

“Dromund System course laid in, my lord,” Levirik stated dispassionately. “If I may have my leave, Lord Arzon, I need to make a few adjustments to our countermeasures and ballistics system. We’ll need all the edge we can muster, flying into the Maw of the Council like this.

“You’ve set the charges on Lord Uthous and Karkis’ ships?”

“Yes, my lord. Any investigation should be lead to believe both ships and crew where completely atomized after Lord Karkis’ hyperdrive went critical in the ensuing battle.”

“Very well, see to your repairs, Commander,” Arzon replied with a dismissive wave of his hand.

Where the Chiss agent had disappeared, Uthous and Karkis were now dissonantly emerging embroiled in a back and forth exchange.

“For the last time, you miserable retch, if you expect to be included in this rather than jettisoned into the vacuum of space, you’ll learn that your only contribution comes from your saber,” Karkis lashed.

The space of the doorframe where Uthous’ hand lay began to buckle as his contempt for Karkis surged through it. The corners of his lips curled into a sneer. “You may find out all too soon how accommodating I can be in that regard, Karkis.”

“Enough of your prattle, both of you,” Lord Arzon boomed, laying the quarrel to rest. “I happen to share your agent’s concern for the latest direction your scheme has taken us, Karkis. Surely you recognize that taking the text to the Emperor delivers us into the waiting hands of the Council. The Council will see us destroyed before they ever let us get close.”

“True enough, cousin,” Karkis replied plainly. “I am afraid, however, that if we are to make things interesting for the Council, and thereby establish ourselves as a presence, then we need to make a showing before the Emperor. We have the advantage in the fact that they should not expect a move so bold…”

“…or stupid,” Uthous chortled.

Karkis cut his eyes toward Uthous, annoyed, but he continued. “We don’t actually need to make it to the Emperor, but we need to make sure he is aware we’ve been there. Cipher Corps intelligence indicates the Archives within the Dark Citadel to be the most likely location for possible artifacts that would enable us to decode the text. The location of this operation is ideal for the fact that we have both the element of surprise, and our victory here will secure our place within the Empire. We do have some choices in how we infiltrate, so we should consider our options before we get there.”

“We’ll need someone for the infiltration and acquisition, and someone to create a diversion. The remaining two will need to cover our escape,” added Arzon.

“I love to cause a ruckus,” Uthous beamed, his ocular implant glinting in the glow generated from the ship’s consoles. “Besides, they don’t necessarily know that I’ve joined your little foray.”

“Well, that’s settled,” Karkis nodded. “Who will infiltrate?”

REIGN: Grasp of the Empire
Chapter Ten

Written by: Darth Eclipter

Levirik checked the power pack on his blaster. It was fully powered and ready for any action that might come his way. He placed it back within his holster, with any luck he would not have to use the weapon. The three dark lords looked over him as he finished making preparations for his mission. Attaching two more grenades to his belt and slinging the sniper rifle over his right shoulder he exited the briefing room of the X-70B Phantom and headed down the boarding ramp. Sith lord Uthous was right behind him stomping down the ramp like a herd of bantha on a hunt.

“Chiss” He called out after Levirik. “Once this business is finished you and I have a score to settle.”

Levirik ignored Uthous’s taunt and continued walking. The Dark Citadel was well over five blocks away and he had no time to waste talking to the begrudged sith. He was risking a lot to betray the three sith lords, but he was not interested in the silly games of Sith lords and the Dark Council. He had information that was vital to the growth of the empire and his first responsibility was that of service to the Emperor.

It took Levirik a little more than an hour to reach the Dark Citadel. While Levirik new Uthous was about to make his grand diversion he smirked to himself. All this time the Sith lords had thought they controlled him and the situation. What had apparently never crossed their minds was who Levirik really was.

Upon entering the Dark Citadel Levirik immediately headed to the Ministry of Intelligence. The Ministry was guarded by two guards both of which stepped in front of the door as Levirik came into view. Levirik had spent his first few months of his recruitment in a similar position as these two. Levirik knew that these men were of no real threat, they were nothing more than decoys. The true threat was the four snipers that had been targeting him ever since he came into the foyer.

Approaching the guards Levirik flashed a smile.

“Agent Levirik reporting in, I need to speak to whoever is your commanding officer on duty right now.” Levirik turned away waited patiently with his arms held against his sides. The guard to his right spoke something into his mouthpiece and looked back up as instruction came to him from inside his helmet.

“Agent Levirik you are free to enter, please head to debriefing room 1523A, Lieutenant Bokur will see you.” The soldier said as he stepped out of the doorway. Crossing into the next room Levirik headed into the familiar office. Making his way down the carpeted hallway he found room 1523A and entered. The room was plain with metallic walls that were common in the Dark Citadel and a small table with two chairs facing in on one another. Taking a seat facing the door he waited. Thankfully he did not have to wait very long as a human male came into the office. Knowing time was running out Levirik cut to the chase.

“Lieutenant Bokur, prepare troops, we have three rogue Sith.”

Bokur raised an eyebrow at the Chiss. “Yes, I see, Commander Levirik I will inform security at once.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Uthous checked his chrono as it counted down. Levirik’s only hope to entering the secure archives of the Citadel was if he could pull off a distraction that would have the Emperor himself aware of his presence. Heading to the Military compound that was near the Dark Citadel had been simple. No average citizen of Dromund Kaas questioned a Sith lord. Looking down at his chrono as it beeped off, he made sure the hour and a half Levirik requested was over.

Uthous noticed two beggars near one of the alleyways. Walking over to the scum he bent down and placed three timed explosives in their sleeping packs. Using a mind trick on the beggars he gave them instructions on what to do. The two beggars picked up their belongings and ran to the entrance way of the military outpost. It was then that the explosives went off. No one would miss the beggars and now the military personal was on high alert.

Turning around Uthous pulled his hood back over his face and started walking back to the Phantom. Without warning from the force an electroshock net landed on Uthous sending electrical shocks throughout his body. Uthous fell to his knees as he looked back up and saw a group of uniformed Imperial agents bearing down on him. As the last bit off electricity crackled over his body he cursed Levirik because he knew they had been betrayed by the Chiss.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Arzon paced back and forth waiting for Uthous or Levirik to return. If what Karkiss said was true then this ancient sith text they had found could lead to just the thing he needed. He was meant for more and was sick of being just another Sith in this empire. Arzon had a vision of greatness; he was destined to lead men and women. Of course he believed in the Empire and the Emperor but there was more. The force told him he was meant for importance, he could feel it in the force.

Arzon stopped his pacing when the force called to him. Something had gone drastically wrong. He could feel an echo of darkness. Looking at his chrono he noted that Uthous should have caused a distraction by this point. Arzon walked to the door of the briefing room and called out to Karkiss. “Any sign of Levirik yet?” Arzon waited for a reply that did not come. “Damn it Karkiss, I need to know…” Arzon didn’t have a chance to finish his sentence as a dart punctured his skin.

Pulling the dart out of his arm he looked down. Suddenly out of nowhere five imperials appeared out of thin air. He noticed their stealth field generator belts as the darts poison began to over take him. Calling on the force to resist the temptation to sleep, he staggered as he pulled out his lightsaber. Another dart embedded itself right above his collar bone. Choking back his surprise he fell face down onto the deck of the ship.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Levirik stood looking over the three Sith lords that where now in force shackles. He had them brought to the Ministry of Intelligence before he would hand them over to the dark council for judgment. Uthous was simmering with anger, Karkiss was sitting quietly, and Arzon was just now coming out of his forced sleep.

“Now that I have all of your attention, gentleman, let me say what a great honor it was to work alongside you for the last few weeks.” Levirik spoke with sarcasm. “You sith always think that because you have the force that you can get away with everything. Well, I have already passed along the text to the Dark Council and they will do with it as they please. You three have forgotten your place in this empire. It is Sith like you that have always caused our demise in the past. The Emperor has given us a chance to retake the galaxy and here you are trying to steal all the power for yourselves. Typical.”

A knock on the door interrupted Levirik.

“Enter” Levirik ordered.

Lieutenant Bokur entered the room and handed a datapad to Levirik. Quickly scanning the datapad Levirik turned to Bokur. “You are dismissed Lieutenant.” Bokur quietly exited the room the door closing behind him.

“It would appear you have a friend in a higher office than mine. According to this datapad the Dark Council has already passed judgment on the three of you. Lord Karkiss is meant to remain here in Kaas City and have a trial. It appears the Dark lords have found your involvement in the acts that have taken place most…displeasing. Lords Arzon and Uthous are ordered to return to the temple we discovered on Hoth and prepare for an arrival of imperial personal. These personal will help clean up the temple and prepare it for other purposes.” Levirik looked at the three Sith and shook his head.

“Lucky son of a nerf herders” The door hissed open as he approached. Bokur was standing just outside the door. “Get these three out of my sight.” Levirik ordered Bokur as he began to walk out. Turning around one last time to look at the Sith Lords, "In case you were wondering," said Levirik with as much sarcasm as he could muster, "the ancient text that we found was nothing more than an ancient sith prophecy.. It says that when the Jedi felt they were invincible, the sith would once again rise and retake what was theirs. The Sith would reign over the galaxy striking at its heart on a day of peace. The Dark Council thought it was worthy enough to show the Emperor himself." Stepping through the door Levirik left the room.

Arzon was lost in thought as Bokur came to release the shackles restraint. The last thoughts running through his mind where of the Empire and the Sith prophecy.

Mate, this is awesome, sorry I saw this the other day and meant to read it then, sadly a ton of testing came up so I was unable, waiting for a large patch at the moment so thought I would read it now, and glad i did!! Smile

I love this kind of thing, more than anything, I used to do this in an old guild of mine and some of the stories that came from it were stunning, much like this one! Smile

Man I miss writing those......./sigh

Keep up the good work mate, and if you ever want this thread cleaned up in the future etc, let me know, and I will jump on it Smile (i.e. if this post etc is in the way of the continuation of your story I will move it Smile)

Hey thanks, Ty! If ever you're looking to pass the time during a patch, you and anyone here at RiG is more than welcome to swing by Reign's RP section and tell your character's story, participate in some play by post RP, or join in on a story relay. Additionally, I've been helping some of our members with their backstories (be it ghostwriting or editing), and I wouldn't mind helping some of the RiG folks with there stories as time allows also. Look for my Writer for hire thread there as well Smile

Update: Added the final two chapters to REIGN: Grasp of the Empire

Appologies for the updates to this falling by the wayside for the past weeks. There have been a ton of RP projects at Reign to keep up with in the past month. Our first class through our Master/Apprentice and Trials system has culminated into a multi-player play by post RP session that I'm helping to administer, and its come as we've tried to get our guild story wrapped up.

In the end, its been an interesting experience to not only work in tandem with the guild leaders and multiple writers, but to make story decisions via democracy. We're pretty happy with the way this has turned out, as it not only gives a bit of lore-based insight into the creation of Reign, but it also allows for the guild membership to easily integrate their own personal character stories into the greater guild backstory. I hope those following have enjoyed it as much as we have creating it.
