Crafting- A First Look Crafting_group-5-590x331

Crafting- A First Look Vette_crafting-4-590x331

Quote :
BioWare’s Blaine Christine was more cagey on TOR’s crafting skills, but unveiled two subsets of the overarching ability: ‘artifice’, presumably used to make weapons and armour, and ‘biochem’ that provides medical and stim-packs. The image of a Sith Warrior beavering away at a workbench packing band-aids into a first-aid kit clearly doesn’t work within Star Wars’ fiction – instead, you can stand at the back and bellow “WORK HARDER” at your friends and minions as they do your nit-picky work for you. Or just leave them to it and get on with other missions. The Old Republic only lets you take one computer friend down with you on missions, and when you’ve packed a buddy off to complete a job for you, they’re unavailable for the duration.

‘Missions’ are the final skill tree branch, and encompass ‘diplomacy’ and ‘treasure hunting’ specialisations as well as a few others. Choosing an inveterate trinket-seeker to nip down to a planet and go hunting for prizes gives you a good chance of them coming back with a spangly new item in hand.

The intention is to increase interaction with your team members, rather than just rolling with your favourite every time. With the crew skills system, BioWare hopes to foster the kind of personalised communal living arrangement that made the Mass Effect games feel so personable in the cold vacuum of space.

I still don't quite no what to make of crafting? I like the way they have got around the more boring sides to it, but it always beings me back to Damion Schuberts post about this game offering dedicated craters a way to stand out from the crowd?
If your not even in charge of making it, and it's all automated, how will that work?
Will have to wait and see I guess, but will watch this with interest Smile

Basically, I look at it this way.

We don't know the full details, but look at the companions crafting as a more robust and animated UI compared to what you find in WoW or other MMO's. You're still the main person clicking the buttons and making the decisions on what to make and who goes on what missions, and it frees up your own time to do other things.

What hasn't been discussed is how you can customize your own main character, you still might be able to specialize in a certain type of trade skill, that gives you unique options whereas the companions offer a generic group (with some specialties depending maybe if they feed off your specialty) that you use to help tailor the direction you want to go in crafting wise.

Could just be your companions make everything and you put points into them on how good they are to help make it more interesting. We basically were given a teaser, need more info to really know for sure.

Actually I've played a game - well, more dabbled in it to waste time, but still - which had a crafting system that sounds similar to at least some degree.

You could send your crafting NPCs out on gathering missions or give crafting tasks, which cost currency and time. And especially on higher end stuff the fail rates were pretty high (or super high cause it was "free to play" and all, so people would buy stuff to improve the odds).

Crafting certain things required quest rewards (or cash shopping again), so it wasn't all endless. and crafting the right things could take a long time with a lot of luck.

Well, I think it can be like that.

Except that the crafting/gathering NPCs could get sad/mad and run off when you treat them as slaves, not expecting that to be so likely for SW:TOR. Maybe that gives people a little idea on how you can look at it, but it may be very different.

But chances are everyone will be a crafter, if it's too easy. I hope there are things like hidden recipes, so you do a lot of trial and error to find something noone else can make, that can make people able to make a name for themselves. At least until someone throws it on a wiki.

I'm very curious about the crafting myself, I'm finding it quite intriguing - especially after their "WoW with a twist" older comments.

I'm guessing that Bioware is going to try making all directly non-combat grinds more painless by having your companions do it. It looks like all we'll be doing is telling our companions what to do (i.e. gather Kolto, craft 20 stimpacks) and they will be doing that. The "Diplomacy" profession sounds like faction rep building to me...

I think we can even send our active companion to gather at nodes... I'm guessing that when we click on it the companion automatically runs to it and starts gathering, and only if we are within range of the node and closer than the companion (if the range is more than an arm's reach) do we gather ourselves.

I have a feeling though that the player will be able to do all this stuff as well - probably faster and more efficiently but of course at the cost of your actual questing etc being slower due to your working.

I love the new crafting details. The ONLY thing that I'm curious about is how the passive gathering will work... Will there be a cutoff? Diminishing returns? SOMETHING that will stem the tide of massive inflation if you can just "set it and forget it" with your companions and gathering.

This isn't me being negative, I'm just curious how Bioware plans to handle this.

Maybe this Friday's update will have more on crafting?

I love crafting in games, I mastered all of the crafting professions in SWG (Mando armor, RIS, you name it) I used to whip out Millennium Falcons just for fun. I always do it in games that have it. Even KOTOR2 lol. So don't worry if you don't like crafting because I'll probably be one of the guys spending stupid amounts of time figuring it out in SWTOR.

I hope so, I know a few guildies who are really interested in how the crafting is going to work, one of them has 3 accounts for banks and hunters just to level each trade skill.

I'd like this friday's update to be about a class or crafting, though I'm leaning towards thinking it's going to be crafting with how they've handled previous updates.

That, or maybe some more info on the companions themselves, that might be a good update too.

Heh, this sounds familiar! I used to have accounts enough to master most crafter classes. Embarassed SWG and EQ2 I spent a ridiculous amount of time crafting, harvesting, setting up shop. So yeah, nothing can be too deep in when it comes to TOR. I'm pretty sure it won't be the same time sink and somehow I feel good about that. Maybe I'll even have time to raid and PvP now Suspect

From what I understand of the crafting, the Companions are just there to "animate" what is usually a progress bar (or instant creation) and add a bit more interaction in the crafting process. The whole thing give me NWN2 Stronghold flashback, the player just made the decisions and paid the bills, the NPCs did all the works..

As a bonus, you don't have to watch them do something and can leave them crafting in the ship while you get wealthy, err, I mean while you save the galaxy. As a minus, you can't use them while adventuring if they are "busy", so there is some sort of balance build into the system.

We also don't know if each class get all proficiencies though companions for crafting/gathering/missions disciplines. This is where played dependencies could arise. It also seems like mostly a "endgame" activity too, you will probably need all companions to make "awesome" stuff.

Right now, I think the crafting look interesting. It's not going to be "I'm a farmer" type of crafting, but it doesn't mean it's not going to be fun to do.

Yes.

An online friend made this image because I'm apparently an Eyore and a Cylon...It wasn't an avatar in the beginning, but it was simply too awesome not to turn it into one.

One thing I certainly hope they add in is some type of communication dispatch from your companions when they're done with any particular task. If you could actually hear the communication that would really flesh out the game imo. I'd hate to have to keep going back and checking to see if they're done so there's no wasted crafting time.

Well, we've seen holonet terminals used that have holographic displays like in episode two, but on a taller scale. You might use that to check in on them when you're out in the field, could be pretty neat.

I kind of like the idea of having your offline time accruing crafting items. It seems kind of like the offline bonus exp that you get in many MMOs already on the market, but seems a bit more practical than saying, "Here's some extra exp while you were away." Instead, you get to get back in game and find that your companions have been busy trying to supply your endeavours, which seems more immersive to me.

However, as a person who enjoys crafting in my MMOs, I have to wonder how much actual crafting will take place. I know they're trying to limit the effect standard MMO mechanics have on the Star Wars experience, but I truly enjoy the satisfaction of putting basic materials together and creating something better. I think this basic x + y = somethingUseful is a basic mechanic that allows players the ability to feel like they are personally enhancing their play experience in a very tactile way.

I have been shying away from crafting as a whole since the horrors of the holo-grind in SWG. My dumb azz decided to knock out the ENTIRE crafting tree/ proffessions back to back to...you get the picture. What it boiled down to, was me clicking, and clicking, and...for like a week solid. I wanted to pull me hair out after that. Thank goodness for the "crafting macro"!!

But seriously, I really think the crafting / economy/ vendor system in SWG was one of the games strengths. I hope they don't overlook that in TOR

And, Variable, "the Hoff" Kills me everytime I look at your Avatar photo= classic!!

Did any of you read this interview? Someone just posted it on the official forums and I must say that it contains a load of new stuff about crafting, very very interesting:

Super rare recipes? Dedicated crafters possible? Top tier items crafted? I'm very impressed.....

And confirmation that there is an embargo until December for more stuff! Cool and one of the best interview about the PvP/Crafting release.

I guess that when you have good questions to ask, you get good answers.
