| Thanks I'm probably not very talented anymore... I haven't picked up a pen or pencil in quite awhile. When I realized I didn't want to commit my life to my art (my goal was to get into gaming), and instead wanted to focus more on my family, I knew that I had to choose between the two. Obviously I chose my wife and my kid(s) (only one, but more to come!). And so that drive in me has slowly faded away since I haven't had the time to work on it. *shrug* | |

Thanks. That one was a good challenge at the time because I had never done that much hair before... With a pencil and not charcoal, it seems overwhelming at the time, lol.

| Could you please downsize your pics so that they're inline with the boards? It'll make it easier to read comments, too. Thank you | |

Sure thing. Since I'm at work so I dunno if it's possible for me to resize them here, I'll just remove the img tag and make them a link instead.

You definately should, those are amazing! I'm sure you can manage a bit of time from here or there. I wish I could draw like you. Last summer I bought a drawing tablet for my PC and started training with that. Sadly I'm sometimes quite lazy...

Sadly I'm sometimes quite lazy... Drawing tablets are great... I bought one once... before my dog ate it.
Recommendation though if you don't mind? If you really want to get into drawing, start with a traditional median. Try to avoid learning to draw on a computer, because there is too much room for "error fixing".
Start with charcoal on newsprint, or traditional pencil on paper. It allows you to get a real feel for drawing, but doesn't give you that freedom of easily fixing whatever mistakes you make. And to REALLY fine-tune your skills, try inking with brush, not pen. It is one of the hardest medians (in my opinion), because you CANNOT make a mistake. Every stroke has to be planned. It really teaches patience and steady-hands.
Edit: One thing I also did in my inkings (can you tell I like to ink? ), is to try and introduce tone into inkings (which is never done), by using water to dilute the ink. It was definitely a challenge, because it was all guesswork. Knowing how much to mix to achieve a certain tone... it was definitely a challenge, but it was really fun to do. My teachers (at my art school) at the time all crowded around me and were asking me how I was doing it and what techniques I was using, lol.

| I appreciate your advice, and will take it into consideration.
The thing that really got me to get a drawing tablet, was the fact that it was so easy to fix mistakes. I'm kinda terrified to make mistakes, and right now, I feel it's just easier this way. I might get too afraid to actually draw anything if I couldn't afford mistakes. Perhaps when I gain some more confidence in my skills, I will try what you suggested.
But I understand your point, that when you need to be careful and plan what you do, it makes you really focus. You have to put more thought into what you do, and that will make you learn better. I really hadn't thought about it that way before.

I really hadn't thought about it that way before. Ya, it may seem easier to learn on the computer, but (in my opinion), it puts a potential handicap on you because you get used to the leniency it provides.
Most artists that I've talked to will say that most who start on the computer almost never transition to a traditional style. But those who start in a traditional style can easily bounce back and forth from traditional to computer.
But in the long run, it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you enjoy it more on the computer and have no plans to take it any further than that, then sticking with just computer art may be fine for you. It all depends on what your goal is.
